work has been crazy - so when captain scott bussen on the relentless out of port canaveral invited us to fish the cal dixon tournament on saturday we jumped at the chance.
the crew would be - my partners troy and jenny denson, my wife cory and new BoldWater crew member pam mosler.
the plan was to run out to the reef and catch a weighable kingfish or cobia. capt. scott threw the net in the morning and got us all the pogies we would need for the short time we would be live baiting.
i start the box off with a kingfish.
the bite was steady but we didn't find a tournament winner.
we added a few dolphin into the mix.
then a few bonita crashed the party and we headed offshore for phase 2 of the plan - bottom fishing.
with a well full of pinfish it didn't take long to find some takers in 185 feet of water northeast of port canaveral.
pam proved she could turn the handle and added the first gag to the box.
it didn't take long before cory was bowed up as well. she was a little worried to fish because she had just recovered from shoulder surgery.
needless to say she was back up to par.
another nice grouper hits the box.
next spot we hit the deep - captain scott adds to the catch.
troy not to be out done strokes a good size warsaw grouper unfortunately they are not a species in the tournament.
cory adds some color to the box.
then jen gets taken to the rail - a few tense moments and healthy black belly hits the deck -
i pick off a stray dolphin on a floatline while bottom fishing - a couple more fish hit the box.
as we make our final drifts in the deep - scott adds another good fish to the catch.
and i finish us off with a small grey - i think you can see how disappointed i am with the catch...
back at the dock we weigh in to find out jen's grouper is the largest fish of the event - first place grouper and calcutta fish.
the girls prove to us once again they can hold their own!
fun stuff - we do the hang... snap off some pics and start the partying.
i think pam is going to fit in real good around the BoldWater office.
